Frequently Asked Questions
What is pelvic floor therapy?
Pelvic floor therapy is a specialized form of physical or occupational therapy designed to improve the strength, coordination, and function of your pelvic floor muscles. It can help with concerns like bladder or bowel leakage, pelvic pain, prolapse, and recovery after childbirth or surgery—allowing you to move through life with more confidence and ease.

Will there be an internal exam?
Your comfort always comes first. Internal exams are completely optional and only done with your full consent. If you prefer, we can explore self-guided assessments with your clothes on. This is your healing journey, and I’m here to provide information and support in whatever way feels best for you.

Who can benefit from pelvic floor therapy?
Pelvic floor therapy is for anyone experiencing pelvic floor dysfunction—whether it’s urinary or fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, pain during intimacy, chronic pelvic discomfort, or postpartum recovery. No matter your age or stage of life, if you’re struggling with these issues, you deserve compassionate, effective care.

Do I need a referral for pelvic floor therapy?
In California, you don’t need a doctor’s referral to see a licensed pelvic floor therapist. However, some insurance plans may require one for reimbursement, so it’s always a good idea to check with your provider. I do not work with insurance companies directly.

What can I expect during a pelvic floor therapy session?
During a session, a pelvic floor therapist will assess your muscle strength, coordination, and any areas of dysfunction. Treatment may include exercises, manual therapy, biofeedback, education, and lifestyle modifications to improve pelvic health.

Is pelvic floor therapy painful?
Pelvic floor therapy should never be painful. If you have tight muscles or existing pain, you may feel some discomfort—but we will always go at a pace that feels safe and supportive for you. Your comfort is my priority.

How often will I need pelvic floor therapy?
Most clients start with weekly sessions for the first 4 to 6 weeks, then gradually transition to biweekly or monthly visits based on progress and personal goals. Your healing timeline is unique, and we’ll adjust as needed to ensure you feel supported every step of the way.

Is pelvic floor therapy covered by insurance?
Mind Body Marin operates as a fee-for-service practice, meaning payment is due at the time of your session. While I don’t contract directly with insurance companies, I can provide a superbill upon request—allowing you to submit it for potential reimbursement. However, coverage varies by provider, so I recommend checking with your insurance for details.
